How to play Chess

1. White moves first. Tap a piece to see where it can go, then tap a highlighted square.
2. Each piece moves its own way: pawns forward, knights in an L, bishops diagonally, rooks straight, the queen both, the king one square.
3. Capture by moving onto an enemy piece. You can never make a move that leaves your own king in check.
4. Castling, en passant and pawn promotion are all allowed.
5. Checkmate — the king is attacked and cannot escape — wins the game.
6. Stalemate, too little material to mate, threefold repetition and the 50-move rule end the game in a draw.
